Is your lamp still performing? Why proper curing matters more than ever this Christmas
Posted by Magda Gniewek on
''Magda, should I change my lamp? I Think It’s not curing anymore…”
I get this message all the time.
“Magda, my products don’t cure like they used to.”
“My top coat is dull.”
“Could it be my lamp?”
And my answer is almost always the same - yes, it probably is.
Because even though your lamp might still look fine, inside it’s not performing like it did on day one.
And when curing fails, it doesn’t just affect your shine - it affects your clients’ safety, your product performance, and your confidence behind the table.
So let’s talk about it - why curing matters so much, how to know when your lamp is getting tired, and why now (before Christmas!) is the perfect time to check it.
What curing really means (in simple language)
Every gel, base, or top coat you use is made of special ingredients that need UV light to harden.
When your lamp shines on the product, it triggers a chemical reaction called polymerization - that’s when the gel turns from liquid to solid, smooth, shiny, and durable.
This reaction happens thanks to photoinitiators - little particles that “wake up” when hit by very specific wavelengths of UV light.
They start linking small molecules into strong chains, creating the structure that makes your nail set last.
But here’s the thing: this can only happen if your lamp emits the right kind of light at the right strength.
If your lamp is old or weak, it may not give your gels what they need to cure completely - even if they look fine.
The hidden problem: under-curing
Under-curing is one of the most common (and most dangerous) issues in salons.
It happens when your product hardens only halfway - usually around 50%.
It looks and feels cured, but it isn’t.
That means:
❌ Nails can lift, crack, or lose shine faster
❌ The product stays chemically active inside
❌ Both you and your clients are exposed to under-cured dust when filing or soaking off
And here’s the scary part - you can’t tell by looking.
Once your client leaves, that product might only cure an extra 4–6%. It’ll never reach 100%.
Under-curing doesn’t just weaken the nails - it can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions over time.
Redness, itching, small blisters, sensitivity, even onycholysis (where the nail separates from the nail bed).
This is why curing properly is not just about good results - it’s about health and safety.
Why it happens — and how to fix it
Curing depends on four key factors:
1️⃣ The range of UV wavelengths your lamp emits
2️⃣ The intensity of those wavelengths
3️⃣ The time the product is exposed to light
4️⃣ The thickness of your gel application
Every gel formula uses different photoinitiators — and each one reacts to its own specific wavelength.
Think of it like a fingerprint — if your lamp doesn’t “match” that fingerprint, the product won’t cure properly.
LED lamps are powerful, but their wavelength range is narrow.
If your gel needs a wavelength the lamp doesn’t produce, it simply won’t cure fully.
And if the lamp is too old, too weak, or has uneven power - it’s even worse.
That’s why it’s so important to use a lamp that’s designed and tested for your product line.
Christmas is coming, don’t risk it
We all know what December feels like:
Busy days, last-minute bookings, long nights, and festive pressure.
Your lamp will be curing nonstop.
So ask yourself honestly:
💭 How old is your lamp?
💭 Does it still cure evenly?
💭 Are your gels fully hard after 30 seconds?
💭 Are clients ever coming back with lifting or dull shine?
If you’re unsure — take this as your sign.
Because there’s nothing worse than a lamp failure in the middle of Christmas rush.
